Increasingly, local, independent entrepreneurs are stepping up to take responsibility for the health and wealth of their own communities - and a growing body of research shows their approach is succeeding. But while the innovation coming from the grassroots is revolutionary; it is very under-resourced. Capital is concentrated in the financial sector and is no longer in the hands of communities. In most cases, investors are still developing their criteria for strong local economy investments, few foundations have a local economies lens, and governments, at all levels, are skewed toward subsidizing large corporations.
BALLE is focused on driving more investment toward local economies. We are working with communities, funders, and investors around North America to spotlight innovation and to improve financial resources to locally owned businesses and to the networks that support their success. Through on-going ‘community capital’ tool-kits and webinars, we document the best strategies for moving money from Wall Street to Main Street. Through finding and sharing the hard data behind the local movement we’re proving how locally owned business strategies are the key to creating and scaling real prosperity. And through identifying and bringing together the most forward thinking funders we are supporting a new approach to local economy investing and philanthropy.
