Bert manages community economic development initiatives for Nisga’a Lisims Government in British Columbia.

Bert (Bertram) Mercer has served as the Manager of Economic Development at Nisga’a Lisims Government for nearly a decade, working with entrepreneurs, corporations, societies and villages. He has also been involved in Nation projects in tourism, forestry, fishing and mining and green energy and has won awards from CANDO for the National Community Economic Developer of the Year in 2014 and Open for Business Award from the BC Provincial Government – Small Business Roundtable. Bert’s education has focused in the business area for economic and business development, and it also includes a Recreation Leadership Certification training from the Province, Business Administration from NWCC, SFU Community Economic Development (where he is an Alumnus) and a Masters Certification in Project Management through the US based PMI Institute.

Bert has two daughters. The oldest daughter, Kaisha, is 21 and is attending UBCO in Kelowna majoring in forensic Psychology, completing her 4th year. His youngest is 18 and is graduating from high school in 2018. He was born in Cassiar Cannery outside of Prince Rupert BC, which was a commercial fishing town and now resides in the Nisga’a Village of Gitlaxt’aamiks (formerly New Aiyansh).  His hobbies include back country hiking, biking, sport fishing, fitness room and snow shoeing in the winter.
