2016 BALLE Impact Report: A Year of Revolutionary Weaving

“BALLE is changing communities around the U.S. and Canada by changing the folks who love those places. Firing them up. Setting them loose on the world to promote peace and prosperity for all.”
–Eric Griego, 2016 BALLE Fellow

2016 was filled with public reminders that prosperity and well-being are not available to all: Politics divided neighbors. Global temperatures rose. Awareness and protest of police violence and systemic racism increased. Too many across North America struggled economically.

In the midst of these signs that the status quo is crumbling, BALLE also saw a groundswell of leaders collaboratively forging a new path, using local business ecosystems as a lever to protect the environment and create opportunity in under-resourced communities. These visionaries are practitioners, investors, grant-makers, civic leaders, and entrepreneurs. They are weaving networks across sectors and silos and moving from me to we in leadership and business.

In 2016 we increased our Leadership Network by 40 percent, doubled the number of collaborations across the network, were credited for nearly $7 million dollars of investments made in BALLE Fellow organizations, launched a second cohort of community foundations committed to shifting their assets toward impact investing, influenced the health care, investment, and philanthropy sectors, and, through our first ever Leadership Summit, brought together those who are creating the conditions for a new economy to emerge.
